Abstract

A 67-year-old male presented with progressive vision loss in his left eye seven days after receiving the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (BBIBP-CorV, Sinopharm, Beijing, China). Fundus examination and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography angiography (SD-OCTA; Optovue, Fremont, CA) showed serous macular detachment with cystoid macular edema (CME) in the left eye. The patient’s best-corrected visual acuity improved dramatically from counting fingers at 3 m to 20/32, and macular detachment and CME resolved significantly within 10 days, without any treatment. This observation suggests a potential link between transient serous macular detachment accompanying CME and the Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccination. Nevertheless, it is important to emphasize that vaccination against COVID-19 is highly recommended.
